Our History

The Rotary Club of Burke-Sunrise was organized on March 22, 2001 and received its charter on May 14, 2001. The youngest of the three Rotary clubs in Burke County, Burke Sunrise was sponsored by the Valdese and Morganton clubs as a breakfast club.

Within six months of its charter date, the club's first community service project provided a tribute to World War II veterans on December 7th, 2001---the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The conception, planning, development, and construction of the memorial led to its dedication in November 2005. Continuing that tradition, Burke-Sunrise has subsequently contributed thousands of dollars to local charities through the Petals Over Poverty Rose Sale, raised funds for numerous overseas projects, and recently developed two on-going projects, the S.T.R.I.V.E program, and Stop Hunger Now project.

Being Rotarians is our mission and is very important to us. We are very proud of our accomplishments but always are looking to do more. Please check out our website and visit us and find out why we are called the “Friendliest Club in District 7670 (Western North Carolina).”

2001

With help from District Governor Harry Brogden and Assistant Governor Chuck Moseley, Rotarians Chip Black, Joyce Counihan, Alan Anton, Bob Shepherd, Ken Robinson, and Richard Whisnant helped recruit members and charter the club.
